Helen
Versey – Privacy Commissioner, Victoria.
Helen Versey was
appointed Victoria's second Privacy Commissioner on 13 March 2007.
Ms Versey qualified as a lawyer in the United Kingdom and came to
Australia in 1982. She worked in private practice in the United
Kingdom, Darwin and Perth specialising mainly in criminal law,
family law and personal injuries litigation. Before moving to
Melbourne in December 2001, Helen worked for 13 years at the WA
Equal Opportunity Commission. She was the senior lawyer and acted as
Commissioner during the Commissioner’s absences from the office.
Helen has a combined honours degree in law and sociology from Exeter
University, U.K. She is trained as a mediator with LEADR (Leading
Edge Alternative Dispute Resolvers) and is a member of the
Australian Institute of Administrative Law.
Dr Astrid Birgden -
Director, Compulsory Drug Treatment Correctional
Centre, NSW.
Ms Astrid Birgden is a
forensic psychologist with over 20 years experience in the
assessment, treatment and management of high risk offenders
(primarily sex offenders). She has established statewide programs in
disability services, corrections and courts in Victoria. She is a
past Chairperson and Treasurer of the Victorian Offender treatment
Association. In February 2006, she took up the position of Director,
Compulsory Drug Treatment Correctional Centre, NSW Department of
Corrective Services. Astrid is published in the areas of offender
rehabilitation and therapeutic jurisprudence and is a fellow at
Deakin University.
Michael
Benes – Lecturer, RMIT University, Victoria.
As a
criminologist, Michael has some 30 years of experience in Criminal
Justice. This includes working in the Victorian correctional system
as a prison officer, policy advisor in juvenile justice, leading
positions in crime prevention organizations, consultant, lecturer
and academic. He has lectured widely in Australia, Czech Republic
and Peoples Republic of China where he holds titles of a Visiting
Vice Professor and Professor respectively.

INDIGENOUS FAMILY VIOLENCE PROGRAM IN THE APY
LANDS
The Indigenous Family Violence Offender Program is a 54 hour group work
program. Referrals primarily come from courts and the parole board; however
voluntary referrals are encouraged and accepted.

The program addresses: Indigenous family violence; recognising and
responding to anger build-up and calming down; intergenerational aspects of
violence; the law and family violence; recognising and responding
appropriately to anger; violence and substance abuse; motivation to change
and changing controlling behaviours; abuse of power; dynamics of family
violence, racism; jealousy; trust; relationships; fathers and fathering;
taking responsibility for own behaviours; resolving conflict without
violence and change.
The program is delivered in communities by dedicated Program Officers based
in Alice Springs with assistance from local community Cultural Brokers.
